Arc Raiders Replacing AI Voice Lines With Real Voice Actors After Controversy
Embark Studios has confirmed that many of the AI generated voice lines in Arc Raiders are being replaced with recordings from real voice actors. The change comes after ongoing discussion in the gaming community about the role of artificial intelligence in voice acting and whether it could replace human performers in future games.
The developer had previously experimented with AI generated dialogue in both Arc Raiders and its other title The Finals. That decision sparked criticism from some players who worried that generative AI might eventually reduce opportunities for professional voice actors.
Embark CEO Patrick Söderlund addressed these concerns and explained that the studio has continued to work with real actors throughout development.
âWe pay our actors for all time spent with us in the booth and continue to bring many of them back as we carry on updating the game.â
According to Söderlund, some actors also give permission for limited use of their voices through text to speech licensing. This allows the development team to generate certain minor lines using AI, mainly for gameplay features like ping system audio, which are considered less critical to the overall immersion.
Despite the attention around AI technology, the studio says most voice lines in Arc Raiders are recorded by real performers. In fact, several lines that were originally generated with AI have already been replaced with recordings from professional actors after the gameâs early versions.
âThere is a quality difference. A real professional actor is better than AI.â
Söderlund acknowledged that professional performers still deliver stronger results in terms of emotion, timing, and personality. Because of this, Embark decided to re record some of the AI generated dialogue using human voices.
The studio now says that Arc Raiders currently contains fewer AI voice lines than it did earlier in development.
At the same time, Embark has not abandoned AI tools completely. The technology is still used internally to test dialogue during development. By generating temporary lines, the team can quickly experiment with multiple variations before bringing actors into the recording booth.
This approach allows developers to test many different options and identify the best lines before recording the final version with professional voice actors.
The situation highlights the larger debate happening across the gaming industry. While artificial intelligence can speed up production workflows, many developers acknowledge that human voice acting remains essential for delivering authentic performances in modern games.
For players waiting for Arc Raiders, the shift toward more recordings from real actors suggests that the final in game dialogue will feel more natural and immersive as development continues.
