GTA V Browser Port Vanishes Within Hours of Going Viral

November 1, 2026

A site called playgta5.com let people play Grand Theft Auto V inside a Chrome tab on October 6, and within hours it had stopped working. The cause of the shutdown has never been confirmed, and nobody has claimed to have built it.

  • Date: October 6, 2026
  • Site: playgta5.com (domain registered October 3, owner hidden)
  • Reported tech: WebAssembly port
  • Developer: unidentified
  • Status: offline since the evening of October 6
  • Official confirmation of a takedown: none reported

The clip that set it off came from the X account Pixel Gamer 4K and pulled 1.5 million views, GodisaGeek reports. Gizmodo described it as an actual port of the game rather than a lookalike. GTA BOOM says the footage showed the story-mode prologue and free-roam Los Santos running in Chrome.

Stuck in loading at 24%

Getting in was another matter. According to GTA BOOM, plenty of people never got past an archive-mounting screen that stalled at 24%, or ran into runtime errors. It worked best on Chromium-based browsers with decent hardware, and only if the full asset load finished before the traffic surge broke the site.

By late that day the site had stopped loading for new visitors and was showing a default page with a thank-you message instead of the game.

Who built it

Nobody knows. GTA BOOM says the domain was registered on October 3 through NameSilo with fully privacy-protected ownership, and there's no GitHub repo or developer post tied to it. Gizmodo reports that after the game came down, the site briefly asked visitors who wanted the source code.

The theory most people repeat is that someone compiled GTA V's leaked source code to WebAssembly, a browser technology for running heavy compiled code on a web page. GTA BOOM says that hasn't been confirmed. Gizmodo cites an Edmonton-based developer, Alex St Louis, who said AI was used for the port, though Gizmodo questions how he could know.

One number floating around is that the assets were squeezed down to about 700 MB, which Beebom reported as apparent fact. Nobody has independently confirmed it. GTA BOOM puts the game's normal asset size at well over 100 GB.

The takedown nobody confirmed

Gizmodo wrote that Rockstar took the site down almost immediately, and said some people were claiming it was still playable through an archived copy. Gizmodo couldn't get that to load. GTA BOOM was more cautious, saying the shutdown prompted speculation about a Take-Two takedown but the cause remained unclear.

Not the first one pulled

Gizmodo notes that the week before, Bethesda sent a cease-and-desist to the creator of an AI-built, browser-based Fallout-style game set in New York, and it was removed.

Take-Two has a record here too. In December 2025 it filed a DMCA takedown against DOS Zone's Vice City browser edition, and DOS Zone pulled it, per GodisaGeek. TweakTown reports Take-Two also sent a cease-and-desist over a GTA V port for Switch and Android, and that Activision issued a DMCA takedown against a developer's AI-built Black Ops 2 browser ports.

What's still open is who made the playgta5.com port, where the code came from, and whether Rockstar or Take-Two will ever say they were behind the shutdown.
